In most collisions, the driver and passengers will experience rapid flexion and extension of the neck. This can damage and compress the spinal joints and nerves and cause tearing of the muscles and ligaments in the neck and upper back. Symptoms from auto injuries may be felt immediately or may take days or even weeks to develop. After an auto accident people commonly experience headaches, neck pain, low back pain, shoulder pain, stiffness, dizziness, and/or numbness or tingling in their arms or legs. It is not uncommon for some symptoms to occur several days or even weeks following other symptoms. We recommend patients come in as soon as possible after an accident. Please call ahead if you are able and we will make sure you are seen quickly. Your Care Many of our patients come in directly from the accident or after an emergency room visit determines there are no life threatening injuries. If this is the case, you will be treated as an urgent visit. We also have patients who come in days to weeks after their accident when they begin to experience symptoms. During your first visit, your doctor will ask you questions about the accident, your symptoms, and your general health. The doctor will do an examination to determine the extent of your injuries X-Rays and Other Diagnostic Tests Your doctor will determine what x-rays and diagnostic tests as needed. These will be taken or arranged during your visit. Your doctor will discuss your x-rays and test results with you and answer questions. Recommendations After making an assessment of your injuries, your doctor will meet with you to discuss findings and treatment needed. Coordination of Care If your doctor determines that a specialist is needed, you will be referred. Our chiropractic physicians routinely coordinate care with other medical care providers.
