Acupuncture is based on the restoration of the body's natural healing ability. This power or energy is called "Qi" (pronounced "chi"). It has been called by different names by different cultures, however this "Life Force" or "Innate Intelligence" is the essence of self healing. The intent of acupuncture therapy is to promote health and alleviate pain by carefully restoring the natural flow of Qi as it circulates through the 14 known pathways called meridians. There are 365 major acupuncture points located on the body's surface. They are located on 12 bi-lateral meridians and 2 uni-lateral meridians. These Meridians are imaginary lines which run longitudinally around the body ,connecting the body organ systems. Very simply put, acupuncture works very much like Chiropractic, restoring the natural balance and flow of the life force called Qi. The basic principal of acupuncture is that there is a continuous flow of Qi through out the body. This force has 2 polarities : negative , called Yin and positive, called Yang. These alternate rhythmically during every 24 hours. .Yin and Yang have strong parallels with the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems which control all functions of the body. As long as the Life Force in the body maintains a proper balance and change of polarities. Should this balance be disturbed to any degree, illness results. Acupuncture treatment involves the use of very fine needles which are inserted into the meridians to open the passages of the energy flow and restore function. In most cases, the tiny needles are about the size of a human hair. The insertion is almost unnoticed by the patient. In our office, a very light electrical charge is sent through some of the needles. This increases the effectiveness, speeds up recovery time and decreases visit frequency. The duration of a disease, the amount of damage already done, and the general health of each individual patient all must be taken into account as we determine a treatment plan for you.
